Cadbury World Visit

As part of their chocolate topic, year 3 visited Cadbury World in Birmingham.  During their visit they discovered how chocolate is manufactured, which included a tasting session with a choice of toppings.

They also took a step back in time with a walk along Bull Street, which is a full-scale replica of the original street where John Cadbury opened his first shop in 1824!

At the end of the day everyone spent some time in the fun interactive room themed with sweets and chocolate delights.

Science Week - March 2017

Taste the Rainbow

We placed skittles around the outside of a plate then poured warm water into the centre and watched what happened.  All the colours ran to the middle of the plate to create a beautiful rainbow! Afterwards we discussed why the change happened (because the colours were dissolvable).

Fishing for Ice

The children were given a cup containing water and ice cubes and asked to 'fish for ice'  using a piece of string. This can not be done! We then added a teaspoon of salt to the water and ice and were amazed by the results. The salt had caused a reaction to happen with the ice and when the string was pulled out the ice was attached.

Apple Volcano

Miss Cherry put baking soda into an apple, she asked the children to predict what would happen when she poured in vinegar.  Lots of the predictions were correct! The soda and vinegar reacted and shot out of the apple like a volcano erupting lava.

Flower Experiment

Miss Cherry set up 6 test tubes with a small amount of water and different coloured food dye in each.  We put a white flower into each test tube.  We discussed what we thought might happen, how the water will be transported through the flowers and what effect this may have.

Maths Impact Sessions

Parents and carers were invited to join children and work with them in a practical maths lesson led by their Maths teacher to find out about current teaching and learning methods and also how they can support their children at home.

Firework Art

We used PVA glue and salt to create the outline of fireworks and then added watercolours on top of the salt. The salt soaked up the watercolours to give a beautiful outcome. The children loved watching the watercolour paint quickly travel across the salt.

Sunshine Sport

We took advantage of some autumn sunshine to go outside for our PE lessons. The children loved our multi-sports topic as we were able to work on lots of different skills.

We Love Autumn

We have enjoyed the autumn colours; we described the leaves in the classroom and then went outside to play with them, and had some fun throwing them around.

Going Down To The Wood

Year 3 had fun at their storytelling workshop at Foundry Wood. The children made stickmen out of woodland treasures. We made a home for our stickman and came up with adventures that they could go on.

Bread Making

As part of our instructions topic in literacy the children had a bread-making session. They loved getting their hands dirty and made some beautifully creative designs.

Light Up

We loved our topic Exploring Light.

Summer Fair

Class 3KC embraced the spirit of the season at the school Summer Fair, even though the rain did make an appearance, and loved taking part.

Drawing On The Ceiling

Much fun was had when year 3 children were allowed to draw on the underside of their tables. They were pretending to be Stone Age people, and had turned the tables into a cave and had a go at painting on the ceiling of their prehistoric home. As a bonus activity some children hunted the field for sticks and tried to paint a picture using these.

Queen's 90th Birthday Celebrations

Year 3 enjoyed celebrating the Queens' birthday, holding our own afternoon tea party. It was a fabulous afternoon - the weather was amazing and the children had lots of fun marking the occasion.

Summer Topic

As an introduction to their new topic, Scavengers and Settlers, the children took part in a scavenger hunt, imagining they were early man scavenging for food and water.

Having Fun in Gymnastic Lessons

In gym lessons year 3 has been learning how to squat on to a vault, how to do dips and kicks along a bench and worked on balances.

Chocolate Topic

Lucky year 3, their current topic is Chocolate. They have been taste testing eight different types of chocolate and raw cocoa beans. They have written descriptions of the taste and texture of each one, and also scored them out of 10 as to how much they liked them.

Period of Reflection

The children have been exploring the outside area of reflection and the symbology of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Festive Performance

Year 3 put on a great show at Christmas, called Straw and Order.

If You Go Down to the Wood

The children did a story-telling workshop for a morning at the Foundry Wood managed-access community woodland in Leamington Spa. They were able to explore the secure woods on their own and then went on a colour hunt to see if they could make a rainbow from things they had found. They then had to create a picture frame and tell their own story to the other children.

Cooking Up Instructions

As part of literacy work on writing and reading instructions the children worked in groups to design and make their own bread roll from scratch.

Egg-citing Work

In science year 3 made vehicles using a variety of technology equipment including saws and glue guns. The children then had to carry out a test to see if their vehicle would travel a set distance and safely transport an egg.

Chocolate Heaven

The children have done chocolate tasting and describing, and they made chocolate muffins to explore following and writing instructional texts.

Waxing Lyrical

Year 3 have learnt what happens when heat is applied to wax crayons. This experiment fitted well with the work they have been doing on the first book they have studied this year The Day The Crayons Quit.

Eye Can See Learning

The science work continued with experiments the children devised to test their friends' eyesight. They had to make predictions, as well as making sure their tests were fair.

Foundry Wood Adventure

We went on a trip to Foundry Wood for a story-telling session. We made woodland perfume, and the children were able to explore the wood on their own as the area is secure. They also made stickmen and built a house for them, creating lots of opportunities for talking, making up stories and imaginative role play.

From Farm To Fork

As part of the Tesco Farm To Fork scheme year 3 visited the supermarket to find out about where food comes from, how far it travels and how shops make products like bread.

Earth Shattering

Year 3 showed off their knowledge at the end of their Active Planet topic with a fantastic display of their expertise and work relating to volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes. The scientists demonstrated erupting volcanoes, artists talked through their vibrant and creative pictures, and authors and poets shared their adventure stories and shape poems. The visiting adults were challenged to create a structure that would withstand an earthquake.

The Sound of Music

The children have been enjoying learning to play a variety of woodwind instruments.
